Q: Besides overheating, what other problems can a faulty fan clutch cause?
A: Yes. A faulty clutch that is permanently engaged will constantly consume significant power, leading to reduced engine power, sluggish acceleration, and markedly increased fuel consumption. Severe bearing wear or internal damage can generate unusual noises or even cause the fan to run unevenly, potentially damaging the radiator core. For designs driven by the engine serpentine belt, a failed clutch increases the load on the belt, accelerating its wear and potentially causing it to break.
Q: Why does the cooling fan on some cars continue to run for a while after the engine is turned off?
A: This is a normal and intelligent feature in modern vehicles, often called "after-run" or "delay cooling." If the ECU detects that the coolant temperature is still very high when the engine is shut off (e.g., after a hard drive or in hot weather), it will command the electric fan to continue running for a period. It uses power from the battery to drive the fan, helping the radiator continue dissipating heat, preventing heat buildup (known as "heat soak") from damaging surrounding components, and creating better conditions for the next hot start.
