Q: Why is a fan clutch necessary? Why not just let the fan spin all the time?
A: Having the fan rigidly connected and spinning at full speed all the time creates several drawbacks. Firstly, it constantly consumes significant engine power, especially at high speeds, which markedly increases fuel consumption. Secondly, it generates constant and unnecessary noise. Most importantly, during a cold start, it actually prevents the engine from warming up quickly to its efficient operating temperature, increasing wear and emissions.
Q: What are the common symptoms of a failing fan clutch?
A: Symptoms fall mainly into two categories: "always engaged" and "always disengaged." If the clutch is always engaged, you will hear a constant, loud roar from the fan even when the engine is cold, and fuel economy will drop. If the clutch is always disengaged, the most obvious symptom is engine overheating during low-speed driving or idling, especially with the A/C on, while the temperature might normalize at highway speeds.
Q: What could be the reason if the fan clutch is completely stationary?
A: If the engine is running but the fan is completely stationary, the situation is critical. First, check if the drive belt is broken or severely slipping. Secondly, the drive shaft inside the clutch might be broken or seized. For electronic fan cluties, also check if the power supply fuse and relay are blown. This is a fault that requires immediate stopping of the vehicle to prevent rapid and severe engine overheating.
