Q: How can you preliminarily judge the working status of a fan clutch by listening to the sound?
A: You can make a preliminary judgment by sound. When starting a cold engine, the fan noise should be very low. As the engine temperature rises, when the coolant reaches a certain temperature (usually around 90°C), you should hear a noticeable increase in fan noise – this is the sound of normal engagement. If the fan produces a loud, continuous "roar" immediately after a cold start, it likely indicates the clutch is permanently engaged. If the fan remains quiet even when the engine is very hot, it suggests the clutch cannot engage.
Q: Why do fan clutches on some diesel trucks appear particularly large?
A: Diesel engines, especially large-displacement commercial truck engines, generate far more heat than typical gasoline passenger cars. They require much greater cooling capacity. A larger fan clutch means it can hold more silicone fluid, has a larger friction surface area, and thus can transmit greater torque to drive larger diameter, heavier cooling fans with more blades to meet heat dissipation demands under extreme operating conditions.
Q: How to handle rust on the inner wall of a silicone oil fan clutch’s "working chamber"?
A: Drain the silicone oil, polish the rust with fine sandpaper (avoid scratching the inner wall), clean the chamber with alcohol (remove rust residue), apply anti-rust agent after drying, and refill with new silicone oil. Regularly check the anti-rust status to avoid worsening rust and component damage. Rust removal and prevention maintain the chamber’s sealing and prevent oil contamination.
