Q: Will a fan clutch work differently if the vehicle’s radiator is replaced with a larger one?
A: Yes, but it will still work—just with less frequent engagement. A larger radiator has better cooling capacity, so the engine stays cooler even with less fan help. This means the fan clutch won’t need to engage as often or run at full speed. As long as the clutch is compatible with the vehicle’s engine, it will adjust to the larger radiator’s cooling ability without issues.
Q: Can a fan clutch’s performance be affected by a dirty radiator?
A: Yes, a dirty radiator makes it harder for heat to escape, so the engine stays hotter. This forces the fan clutch to engage more often and run at higher speeds to try to cool the engine. Over time, this extra work increases wear on the clutch, shortening its life. Regularly cleaning the radiator (removing bugs, dust, and debris) helps the clutch work less and last longer.
Q: Why does the fan clutch sometimes not engage even when the engine is hot?
A: For mechanical clutches, common reasons are low silicone oil (from leaks) or a broken bimetallic strip (can’t sense temperature). For electronic clutches, it could be a faulty temperature sensor (no signal), broken wiring (no power to the coil), or a burned-out coil. Checking these parts (oil level, sensor, wiring) will help find the cause.
